Applying for UT Department of Communication Scholarships

No awards or scholarships continue automatically. You must apply every year. Complete the following six steps and discover if your accomplishments have earned you one of the awards or scholarships granted to the UT Department of Communication majors each year from university funds or from private donors who support students within the department.

You must be at least a sophomore for some and a junior for other scholarships. Read the descriptions carefully. To qualify for scholarships/awards, you must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA unless otherwise stated in the description of the particular award/scholarship. No exceptions will be made.
Only graduating seniors are eligible for the Department of Communication Award.

This year the deadline for your applications is March 4, 2005.
Include a separate application for each award or scholarship providing the following information:

1. In the first paragraph, indicate your status, concentration, GPA, social security number, expected graduation date, and the name of the award/scholarship for which you are applying. UT Department of Communication Awards/Scholarships

The Minnie and Shakee Lacey Memorial Fund Award

The Department of Communication faculty award one or more stipends of varying amounts each year. The award is open to journalism students including news editorial, broadcasting, public relations and photojournalism sequences. The awards are made on the basis of "need and worth." This award is limited to returning students.

The Christopher States Scholarship

The Department of Communication faculty awards one or more stipends of varying amounts generated by an endowment fund. The scholarship is open to full-time students who are broadcasting or radio/television production majors. Students must be in good academic standing, junior status or beyond, and demonstrate a clear interest or proficiency in the study of the history of broadcasting, or in the field of radio/television broadcasting.

Department of Communication Award
The Department of Communication faculty award one or more stipends of varying amounts. Recipients also have their names inscribed on a plaque in the Department of Communication office. The award is open to all Communication majors who demonstrate "pre-professional excellence and performance." Involvement in extra-curricular activities and community service enhance candidates' applications.
This award is only open to seniors graduating in May of the calendar year.

The Bill Day Scholarship

Eligibility for this scholarship is junior or senior status, returning as full time status next year. The student must be in the franchise area of the CableSystem and must be a major in the Department of Communication with a concentration in broadcasting. Must have a GPA of 2.8 or higher and be active in campus or community broadcasting activities. This award is nonrenewable.

Terry Marti Scholarship
